Abstract
In the present study, a newly developed one-beam IR–UV laser cleaning system is presented. This system may be used for
different applications in diverse fields, such as outdoors stonework conservation and canvas paintings restoration. The
simultaneous use of the fundamental radiation of a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser at 1064 nm and its third harmonic at
355 nm was found appropriate to clean pollution crusts, while ensuring that no discoloration (‘‘yellowing’’) would occur.
The optimum ratio of UV to IR wavelengths in the final cleaning beam was investigated. In parallel, the same system was tested
in diverse applications, such as the removal of bonding glues from duplicated canvases. The optimum laser parameters were
investigated both on technical samples as well as on original paintings.
