Abstract
The transverse energy distribution of electrons leaving the exit hole of a glass funnel in a hopping field emission display
(HopFED) has been analyzed. These electrons are accelerated in a uniform field onto the anode screen. The luminance
distribution of the spot on the screen is largely determined by the transverse energy distribution of the electron beam. The
analysis of the luminance distribution shows that the transverse energy is rather low and that a HopFED will have good beam
directionality.
