Abstract :
The importance of the knowledge of the blood groups in regards to the health of an individual is enormous, apart from blood transfusion practice. The different types of information are useful for medical diagnosis, genetic counseling and also for general wellbeing of individuals. To document the frequency of ABO and Rh(D) blood groups among medical students for purpose of emergency transfusion and to compare with other studies . The observational cross sectional study was done in the Department of Physiology at Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, Sri Amritsar. Blood groups of the 500 undergraduate medical students were determined by commercially available standard monoclonal antisera. The sample blood was collected by finger prick method. A drop of monoclonal reagent anti A anti B and anti D were added to a drop of blood on clean glass slide and mixed well. Results of agglutination were recorded immediately. Out of total 500 students, there were 162 males and 338 females. The frequency distribution of blood groups A, B, AB and O was found to be 20%, 39.6%, 9.8% and 30.6% respectively. Study showed Blood group B was more predominate in both males and females. The percentage of Rh+ve and Rh-ve subjects was found to be 90% and 10% respectively. The frequency of Rh+ve is highest with Blood group B followed by O, A and AB. The frequency of Rh- is highest with Blood group O followed by B, A and AB. The frequency of ABO blood groups in both males and females was found to be B > O > A > AB. The frequency of Rh+ve was found to be B > O > A > AB while it was O > B > A > AB in case of Rh-ve in both sexes.
