Abstract :
This study examined economic efficiency of livestock production in Oyo State of Nigeria. The results presented were based on data collected from a random sample of 40 poultry, 40 pig and 40 goat farmers in three towns in the study area using well-structured questionnaires. Analytical tools employed include descriptive statistics and the stochastic frontier production function. Descriptive statistics like tables, frequencies, mean etc were used to analyze the socioeconomic characteristics of the livestock farmers. The results of the descriptive statistics indicated that we have more male poultry and pig farmers (90% poultry and 70% pig) than females. The result further reveal that the mean age of the livestock farmers were 45.4 years, 45.2 years and 52.7 years for poultry, pig and goat farmers respectively. In other words goat farmers in the study area are old compared with poultry and pig farmers. Also, majority of the livestock farmers are married. The stochastic frontier production function was also used to determine the economic efficiency of the livestock farmers as 0.497 for poultry, 0.346 for pig and 0.699 for goat production.
