Abstract :
Preliminary results are presented from a study of the effect of a chromate film on the stress corrosion cracking behaviour of aluminium alloy 2024 T351 in 3.5% sodium chloride solution. It is shown that even though chromating is widely used for better resistance to general corrosion, it does not provide any improvement in resistance to stress corrosion cracking; in fact, it appears to have a marginally detrimental effect.
