Saudi Arabia and Iran: the Islamic Awakening Case

منطقه خاورميانه همواره از تغيير و تحولات داخلي كشورهاي واقع در منطقه، تعاملات موجود در سطح منطقه‌اي و نيز معادلات قدرت در سطح كلان نظام بين‌الملل تاثير پذيرفته است. در حال حاضر نيز تغيير نظام‌هاي سياسي برخي از كشورهاي عربي هرچند مقوله‌اي داخلي است اما توانسته است كم و كيف تعاملات و روابط را در سطح منطقه‌اي تحت تاثير خود قرار دهد. دليل اصلي اين وضعيت آن است كه تحولات موجود در خاورميانه ساختار قدرت در منطقه را تحت تاثير خود قرار داده است. تحولات موسوم به بيداري اسلامي كه منجر به تغيير برخي از نظام‌هاي سياسي در دنياي عرب شده است و برخي ديگر را در معرض چالش قرار داده، خود سبب گشته است كه به صورت ناخواسته جايگاه منطقه‌اي برخي از دولت‌ها ضعيف شود و جايگاه برخي ديگر ارتقا پيدا كند. بررسي تاثير تحولات بيداري اسلامي بر روابط عربستان و ايران به عنوان دو دولت عمده منطقه هدف اصلي اين نوشتار است. در اين نوشتار با بيان اينكه تحولات بيداري اسلامي جايگاه منطقه‌اي عربستان را متزلزل و در مقابل جايگاه منطقه‌اي جمهوري اسلامي ايران را ارتقا داده است، استدلال مي‌گردد كه عربستان در مواجهه با اين وضعيت به اشكال مختلف سياست موازنه جويانه را در مقابل جمهوري اسلامي ايران در پيش گرفته است. بررسي ابعاد و اشكال سياست‌هاي موازنه جويانه عربستان هدف اصلي اين نوشتار مي‌باشد.

The Middle East has always been influenced by internal changes in regional countries, existing interactions at the regional level and power equations in the international system. Similarly, today we witness how changes in the political systems of some Arab countries, although considered internal affairs, have influenced the nature of interactions at the regional level. Developments called an "Islamic Awakening" have led to regime change in some Arab countries and posed a serious challenge for other ones, undermining the regional status of some countries and enhancing that of others. This article aims at studying the impact of the Islamic Awakening on relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia as two major regional states. The author, while assuming that the Islamic Awakening has undermined Saudi Arabiaʹs regional status and in contrast has enhanced that of Iran, argues that Saudi Arabia has adopted a balancing policy against Iran in dealing with this problem. The main goal of this article is to study the different aspects of Saudi Arabiaʹs balancing policy.
