Contact noise in magnetoresistive read sensors for ultrahigh-density flexible media applications

Measurement of the cooling induced noise "contact noise" in magnetoresistive tape recording heads is reported. This form of noise is produced by temperature reduction of the sensor when tape surface irregularities contact the element or shields. Contact noise scales quadratically with element temperature and places constraints on the maximum attainable areal density using anisotropic magnetoresistive tape heads.
