Abstract :
The influence of carbon fabric treatment on delamination in two dimensional carbon/carbon composites (2D-C/C) was studied. The surface chemical elements and surface morphology of both original and treated carbon fibres were examined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope. The properties including interlaminar shear stress, density and open porosity were tested, and delamination defects were characterized using metallographic microscope. It has found that the concentration of surface oxygen element decreases, while carbon element increases after high temperature treatment, which indicates the activities of carbon fiber reduced. The 2D-C/C composites with treated carbon fabric are non-delaminable, while the non-treated carbon fabric reinforced 2D-C/C composites are delaminable during carbonization, which are largely attributed to various interfacial strength in polymer matrix composites, and different degree of matrix carbonization shrinkage.
