Abstract :
A concept of enrichment to interface finite element shape functions was extended for a three-dimensional formulation. The enriched interface element was combined with an enriched laminated continuum element with in-plane damage capabilities in order to simulate the failure of laminated composite plates under low-velocity impact. The enriched elements were implemented as user-defined elements in the commercial finite element code ABAQUS/Explicit. Quantitatively and qualitatively, the prediction of delaminated area obtained with the enriched formulation, using a mesh size of 5 mm, was in excellent agreement with experimental findings.
