Abstract
Effects of spin splitting due to structure inversion asymmetry (SIA) in In0.53Ga0.47As/In0.52Al0.48As and GaAs/Ga0.67Al0.33As heterostructures on the Fermi level EF, the magnetization M, and the specific heat CV of the 2D electron gas are described theoretically. It is shown that the SIA spin splitting (often called the Rashba splitting) causes beatings of EF(B), M(B) and CV(B) oscillations plotted as functions of an external magnetic field B. Influence of Landau level broadening on the beating patterns is investigated in order to optimize possible experimental observations in heterostructures. It is concluded that the effects of the SIA spin splitting should be observable with the use of present technological and experimental possibilities.
