Abstract :
The reactions of atomic p orbital aligned Ca(1P1) with CH4−nCln (n = 1, 2, 3, 4) have been studied by means of laser-induced chemiluminescence in a beam-gas apparatus. The reaction of Ca(1P1) + CH3Cl shows a strong preference for perpendicular p orbital approach to CaCl(A2Π) chemiluminescence product channel. Reactions become less sensitive to Ca(1P1) atomic orbital alignment with increasing n. Results are interpreted in terms of the electron-jump model and the orbital-following model. Absolute chemiluminescence cross-sections and branching ratios are also obtained.
