Abstract
This paper presents the results obtained and the deductions made from a series of wear tests involving austempered chilled ductile iron containing 0.1% Mo and Ni contents varying from 0.5 to 2.5%. By using copper chills of different thicknesses, the effect of wear resistance on varying the chill rate was also examined. The wear tests were carried out using a modified pin-on-disc type wear-testing machine. It was found that wear resistance is highly dependent on the Mo and Ni content combination of the material, as well as the rate of chilling. Moreover, wear resistance also increases monotonically with hardness, fracture toughness, tensile strength and nodule count.
