Abstract :
This paper involves the effect of maleic acid, glycerol, hydrazine, hexamine, and acetic anhydride on polypropylene at room temperature by measuring the weight changes of the samples. The following experiments were performed on polypropylene specimens: Case A, effect of 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50% maleic acid solution on polypropylene; Case B, effect of 50%, 60%, 90% and 100% glycerol solution on polypropylene; Case C, effect of 6%, 10% and 20% hydrazine on polypropylene; Case D, effect of 6%, 10%, 20% and 30% hexamine on polypropylene; Case E, effect of 6% and 10% acetic anhydride on polypropylene. Each sample was exposed to the specific solution for a period of 30 days. The appearance of the solutions were also noted as discolouration could indicate the extraction of soluble components; however, there was no visible change in the solutions and there was no discoloration of the polypropylene samples. The results showed that the mass of the polypropylene samples changed due to absorption/desorption and dissolution during the duration of the experiment.
