Abstract :
The influence of power management in passive optical ring networks has been studied using the total bit-error rate in the system as a figure of merit for optimisation. Two aspects of network optimisation are considered in detail: first, it is shown that due to add(longrightarrow)drop crosstalk, launch powers in added and dropped channels have to be simultaneously optimised for best performance. Secondly, it is shown that a judicious power allocation in multiple optical channels allows for better system performance.
