Abstract :
The strength of corner joints in box construction furniture has a direct effect on the durability of the product. The factors that effect strength are the sheet material selected in production stage, type of corner joints and type of glue. This study investigated the effects of using dowel joints, spline joints and combined use of the two methods on the diagonal pressure and tension strength in corner joints of box furniture constructions for melamine-faced chipboard sheet material. For this purpose, samples were prepared from melamine-faced chipboard using PVAc glue with dowel joint, spline joint and by using the two methods together. Diagonal pressure and tension experiments were carried out on the samples. Experiment results indicated that samples prepared using the two joint types together (combined) provided higher pressure and tension strength values than the widely-used dowel joint type. It was determined that the joint type in tension experiments which provides the highest strength is respectively combined (25.12 N/mm2), dowel (3.946 N/mm2) and spline joint.(0.911 N/mm2), in terms of glue type PVAc (10.792 N/mm2) and polimarin (9.192 N/mm2), In terms of inter active factors joint type + glue type in tension strength respectively combined joint with PVAc (27.260 N/mm2), combined joint with polimarin (22.980 N/mm2), dowel joint with PVAc (4.208 N/mm2), dowel joint with polimarin (3.684 N/mm2), spline joint with polimarin (0.912 N/mm2), spline joint with PVAc (0.909 N/mm2).
