Abstract :
In this paper, the influence of grain refinement (Al–5Ti–1B) and modification (Al–10Sr) on the microstructure, the morphology of iron-containing needle shape beta phase and mechanical properties of cast Al–12Si alloy has been reported. The grain refinement and modification transforms the needle shape morphology of the β-phase into Chinese script. Grain refinement and modification by addition of Ti and Sr respectively increased the quality index (Q) of the casting. Addition of 0.06 wt.% Sr resulted in a best combination of mechanical properties such as ultimate tensile strength and ductility.
