Abstract :
The theory of elastic compliance as developed by Mindlin is used to discuss the sliding of one flat surface on another under dry, purely elastic conditions. A process is described by which a load may be supported across the interface, even during very easy, smooth relative motion and very low friction, provided the elastic materials are compressible.
