Abstract
This paper attempts to reevaluate the tool–chip interfacial boundary conditions in machining, at a fundamental level. Possible applications of fractals to model the tool–chip interface are suggested. Mathematical models are proposed, based on this conjecture, for describing the contact geometry and the proportion of sliding/sticking interfaces. The model assumptions are validated with data obtained from preliminary experiments.
