Abstract :
Adsorption equilibria were measured for methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, and toluene as pure components and binary mixtures with water vapor on BPL activated carbon with an automated volumetric apparatus. Pure organic adsorption equilibria are reported at 25, 50, 75, and 100 (degree)C over a wide range of pressures. Binary adsorption equilibria of organics with water vapor were measured at 25 (degree)C, with organic loadings held almost constant and water vapor partial pressure varying from zero to saturation. Both water and organics exhibit adsorption hysteresis, with higher loading on the desorption branches. At low water loadings, attractive and repulsive molecular interaction of adsorbates is apparent from observed cooperative and competitive effects. At high water loadings, competition for adsorption sites becomes more intense. Binary adsorption equilibrium data were analyzed using both the virial excess mixing coefficient model and the virial mixture coefficient model.
