Direct approaches to annulated indoles. A formal total synthesis of 0231B

An advanced intermediate in the Nakatsuka synthesis of 0231B was prepared using a fluoride-mediated indole formation in the key step. Both palladium-based approaches and hydride-based approaches failed to generate the indole.
