Abstract :
Some mechanical assemblies are subjected to combined impacts and sliding motion, and this leads to complex wear mechanisms. When lubricants are introduced, the friction is reduced and surfaces damage processes are modified. A specially developed impact-sliding tribometer was used to investigate the effect of the different model lubricants on wear behavior of a sintered high-speed steel (M2) under impactsliding. The squeezesliding event was observed using a high-speed camera. An increase of lubricant viscosity was observed to increase the wear depth. In addition, a comparison of wear volumes produced using pure mineral base oil and the same base oil containing an anti-wear, anti-friction additive (ZDDP), shows that this additive has only a weak effect on wear reduction under squeeze–sliding lubrication. A discussion of basic wear mechanisms is presented to explain the observations.
