Abstract
Local scour below pipelines commonly occurs due to the erosive action of currents and waves. Scour is a major cause for the failure of underwater pipelines which is very important in water resources management. In this study, experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of four different pipeline orientations (30°, 45°, 60° and 90°) across a channel. The data sets of the laboratory measurements were also collected from published works. The temporal variation of local pipelines scour depth was studied to estimate the scour depth. The scour depth below the pipeline was determined using a regression model with five dimensionless parameters. A regression model with a coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.55) and a low root mean square error (RMSE = 0.47) produced fairly good predictions of the relative scour depth. The proposed equation gave satisfactory results when compared with the existing predictors.
