Abstract :
Kinetics of reactive absorption of carbon dioxide (CO2) with solutions of aniline in commercial nonaqueous aprotic solvents, namely, acetonitrile, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), toluene, and m-xylene was studied in stirred cell and model stirred contactor at 303 ± 1 K and atmospheric pressure. CO2 partial pressure was varied from 0.57 to 1 atm, and the concentration of liquid-phase reactant aniline was varied from 0.75 to 5 kmol/m^3. In the case of all four solvents used, the reaction appeared to be first order with respect to CO2. The reaction order with respect to aniline was found to be -0.5, 1, 2, and 2.5 in the case of acetonitrile, MEK, toluene, and m-xylene, respectively. The intrinsic kinetic rate constants at 303 ± 1 K were found to be 1.40 × 10^2 (kmol/m^3)^0.5/s, 4.90 × 10^-1 1/ ((kmol/m^3) s), 2.02 × 10^-1 1/((kmol/m^3)^2 s), and 2.45 × 10^-2 1/((kmol/m^3)^2.5 s), in the case of acetonitrile, MEK, toluene, and m-xylene, respectively, as solvents.
