Abstract :
This paper employs mathematical modelling of seawater and brackish water desalination systems utilizing a single-stage reverse osmosis process. It discusses modelling of established graphical and tabulated parameters of modules in a series configuration such as the bundle pressure drop of the brine stream inside the RO permeator (OPfb) and the membrane flux retention coefficient (MFRC). The new technique does not rely on iteration and produces a simple computational model for permeator productivity by modelling the pressure correction factor (PCF).
The new model discussed allows easy, quick and accurate computation for all other operating parameters for an RO system such as the number of permeators, product quality, power consumption, etc., which have an impact on desalination systems and improve their design optimization techniques. This article introduces a new development dealing with the calculation method for single-stage systems, originally devised by the DuPont Company, and broadly used for calculations involving this type of system.
