[60]Fullerene-containing thermotropic liquid crystals Original Research Article

Addition reaction of mesomorphic malonates to [60]fullerene led to fullerene derivatives showing pronounced liquid-crystalline character and good thermal stability. This synthetic concept was applied to prepare low-molar mass (1 and 2) and macromolecular (3) materials. Liquid-crystalline fullerenes represent a novel family of anisotropic materials.
