CONDITION OF A BRITTLE FAILURE DUE TO A DISCRETE ACCUMULATION OF DAMAGE

A failure of a strained material is considered in the one-dimensional formulation with allowance for a discrete accumulation of damage. This approach makes it possible to formulate the condition of a brittle failure as the start of unstable growth of the discrete component of the measure of damage. The long-term strength and the safe stress level are determined for a damaged material, and the velocity dependences of the critical stresses and the character of a failure are substantiated within the framework of the model.
