On the Feasibility of Mechanical Generation of Spin Waves in Superfluid 3He-B

The B phase of 3 He exhibits spontaneously broken relative spin-orbit symmetry (sBsos), i.e. the symmetry is broken only under a relative rotation of spin and orbital axes. This leads to the possibility of exciting spin waves by mechanical oscillation, and observation of such waves would provide the most direct evidence for SBSOS in 3 He-B. Using the hydrodynamic theory of 3 He-B, we calculated the amplitude of spin waves which could be generated by a laterally vibrating surface in a proposed experiment.
