Abstract :
Paleomagnetic and archeomagnetic data show that Earthʹs dipole moment varies considerably on timescales of some thousand years. This must affect the magnetosphere which is controlled by the interaction of the internal geomagnetic field with the solar wind. First-order models of the so-called paleomagnetosphere can be obtained through appropriate scaling of present-day models of the external geomagnetic field. We apply such a scaling strategy to the magnetic field configurations associated with the most prominent magnetospheric current systems and present first results.
