Recently, investigations of empirical traffic data revealed a variety of phenomena, e.g., metastable states with a very high flow and synchronized traffic flow with a sudden drop in the velocity. In this paper we present a survey of the progresses made in modeling and understanding the dynamic traffic phenomena.
