Abstract
Two types of γ hydride precipitates with the same structure were observed in coarse-grained commercially pure titanium containing about 77 ppm hydrogen. The interactions of slipping and twinning with both types of hydrides under cyclic straining were observed using SEM and TEM. It was found that the type-I γ hydrides can be plastically deformed and even ultimately fragmented by a slip mechanism with no voids formed under cyclic plastic deformation. In contrast type-II γ hydrides were difficult to be plastically deformed. The crystallographic mechanisms for the plastic deformation of hydrides are discussed.
