Screw axis defined by Giulio Mozzi in 1763 and early studies on helicoidal motion

Reviewed in this paper are some early studies and the historical evolution of knowledge on the general motion of rigid body. The paper focuses on Giulio Mozzi, who published in 1763 a treatise that can be considered the first rigorous formulation and study of the screw axis.
