Force-linear mechanisms

This paper presents a mathematical model of a large class of machines which experience internal friction losses and maintain an essentially linear relation between input and output forces. The model is described in a general setting and a universal theorem is derived quantifying net work done and energy lost over a given process. Examples are given to illustrate the application of the model to predicting the performance of reciprocating heat engines equipped with such mechanisms.
