Abstract
Cutting experiments have established that the achievement of ultraprecision quality with high-alloy refractory and stainless steels can be managed by a suitable combination of different machining techniques. A new machining method is based on the combination of ultraprecision turning using a CBN cutting tool, ultraprecision burnishing, and oriented polishing. The attainable accuracy and surface roughness approaches the accuracy and surface roughness achieved by turning with a diamond tool. According to previous examination, the wear of the CBN cutting tool is not as dependent on the material of the workpiece as in the case of the application of a diamond cutting tool. Considering that experimental tool materials have been applied during the experiments, cost comparison has not yet been undertaken.
