Abstract :
In this paper the energy consumption related to the roll pass design is studied. Three different types of passes that are commonly used in early stages of many hot rolling products known as break-down sequences (square–oval–square, square–box–square and square–diamond–square) were investigated by the energy consumption criteria. The geometrical parameters of roll grooves have been divided into two main groups, the independent and the dependent parameters. Acceptable ranges of dependent parameters have been deduced from some earlier experimental investigations. The optimization has been performed only with respect to variations of the main parameters and the three different types of sequences were compared.
