Abstract
This paper investigates the effects of elastic–plastic deformation and temperature variations of the workpiece and tools on dimensional errors of a cold backward extruded cup. A finite element (FE) analysis procedure is developed to predict component dimensional deviations during different stages of the cold extrusion process. In an entire cold forming cycle, the material plastic deformation, heat generation, temperature distribution and tool elastic deformation in backward cup extrusion are obtained, which enables a quantitative evaluation of the dimensional errors of the cold formed component with a view to the effects of forming stages on dimensional errors of the extruded cup.
