Abstract :
A limited angles method was proposed for improving cellular automaton (CA) technique to simulate the growth of the grains whose preferential growth direction has stochastic misorientation with respect to the direction of the coordinate system. Using the diagonal between different pairs of nodes, a limited number of angles were simulated to represent different crystallographic axes orientations of different grains. The location was chosen randomly among a large number of cells (or nodes), and the crystallographic axes orientations of the grains were chosen randomly among a certain number of orientation classes. The simulation results indicated that the limited angles method used in the paper can express the randomicity of the crystallographic orientations of different grains. And it is simple and effective to improve CA technique when it is used to simulate grain growth during solidification process.
