Abstract :
X-ray yield data for View the MathML source atoms has been fitted with a cascade model to obtain information on the fraction of annihilation from atomic s-, p- and d-states as a function of D2 target density. Assuming that the cascade model parameter K0 is the same for both View the MathML source and View the MathML source atoms, typical values of 75% and 40% are obtained for the fraction of annihilation from atomic p-states in 1 atm. gaseous and liquid D2, respectively. An analysis of two-body branching ratios with a “spectator nucleon” model gives the fraction of P-state annihilation to be (34±4)% and (40±2)% for the same targets. The relationship between the fraction of annihilation from atomic s- and p-states and the fraction of S- and P-state annihilation is discussed with particular reference to the phenomena of “induced” P-state annihilation.
