Electrochemical synthesis of a polyphenylene deriving from p-methoxytoluene

Polymerization of p-methoxytoluene by anodic oxidation in dry acetonitrile with an ultrasonic stirring has given a soluble polyphenylene. The obtained polymer has a small molecular weight (DP ≤ 30) and shows an irregular structure of meta- and para-polyphenylene motives. The preliminary electro-optical study has shown that the material has conducting and photoluminescent properties.
