Abstract
Semi-rigid joints in steel and composite construction are, at present, a frequently discussed topic. In framed structures, joints are located at points of intersection between beams and columns. In the semi-rigid joint concept, the actual stiffness and resistance of joints are considered thereby influencing the overall performance of the framed structure. The advantages of the semi-rigid joint concept are well known; many experimental studies have been conducted on the behaviour of semi-rigid joints. The contribution described herein outlines a possibility for simulating the behaviour of semi-rigid composite joints using the finite element method. A two-dimensional joint model based on the current state-of-the-art knowledge is introduced that can be analysed using existing finite element programs. Comparisons between simulation and test results show good agreement.
