Abstract
This paper describes a finite element (FE) modelling procedure and parametric study leading to the development of semi-empirical equations for a conservative prediction of pipeline deformation. While quasi-statically loaded pipes were considered in this FE modelling, the experimental test results presented show that the developed energy-deformation equations are equally valid for a conservative design of pipes subjected to impact loading. After the initial experimental verification of the FE model, the parametric study carried out covered a wide range of pipeline geometrical and material properties. The FE analyses were carried out for both the fully fixed and simply supported pipes, which form the two extreme conditions of pipelines under service conditions.
