Abstract :
Method of parameter sensitivity is applied to study the counter-intuitive phenomenon observed in numerical, analytical and experimental studies on the dynamic response of elastic–plastic beams. Direct differentiation approach and central difference approach are used in parameter sensitivity analysis. It is shown that the direct differentiation approach is more suitable for extremely parameter-sensitive problems. A correlation between the parameter sensitivity analysis and the occurrence of the counter-intuitive phenomenon of beam dynamics is established, which is then used to identify the range of the loading parameters for the occurrence of the counter-intuitive phenomenon.
