Abstract
An experimental investigation is presented for the static and dynamic yield stresses of porous metals. Especially, the influence of porosity on the dynamic yield stress of such materials under high loading rates is studied. The two material samples were bronze with 10% tin and pure iron. They were fabricated by powder metallurgy technology with porosity ranging from 10% to 40%. The dynamic yield stress was obtained by performing Taylor direct impact experiments and following a modified theory taking account of the change of density with compressive strain (Part 1, Int J Impact Eng 2001;25:981); the maximum strain rate achieved is 3.6×103 s−1. For comparison, quasi-static tests were also conducted to a large uniaxial compression.
