Abstract :
Non-octahedral slip on the {110} and {100} planes has been confirmed by slip trace analysis of Al–1% Mn crystals hot deformed up to strain rates of 10 s−1. High temperature channel-die plane strain compression tests have been carried out to strains of 1.5 on three orientations at constant true strain rates up to 10 s−1 in the temperature range 400–500°C. The orientations, {001}<100>, {110}<011> and {110}<112>, were selected to favour slip on {110}, {100} and {111}or {112} planes along <110> directions. The influences of temperature and strain rate on the flow stresses of the {110}, {100} and {111}<110> systems have been quantified. It is shown that the high temperature flow stresses of the {110} and {100}<110> non-octahedral systems, when normalised for the slip rate, are about 0.9 and 1.4 times those of the octahedral {111}<110> systems. Approximate activation energies for slip on these systems are given.
