Effects of plant hormones on the activity of alcohol dehydrogenase in lettuce seedlings

Effects of plant hormones on induction of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH; EC 1.1.1.1) were determined. Exogenous auxin, abscisic acid (ABA) and cytokinin induced ADH in 6-day-old lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) seedlings, but gibberellin did not. The ADH activity was increased at concentrations greater than 1 μmol/L for auxin and ABA and 3 μmol/L for cytokinin, respectively, and all increases were found within 6 h after treatments. At 100 μmol/L doses, the activities in the seedlings were 3.9-, 3.2- and 1.9-fold greater than that of non-treated seedlings for auxin, ABA and cytokinin, respectively.
