A method to search for point sources of short duration bursts of superhigh energy gamma rays

A method to search for point sources of superhigh energy gamma rays is described. It is shown that the method is more effective than the one usually used if gamma ray burst durations are short. Using this method, the information from the Baksan installation “Carpet” during 1992–1996 was analyzed. An excess of events was found at the confidence level of about 6.5σ in the direction of Mrk 501.
