Abstract :
A procedure allowing layout and thickness optimisation of composite structures is described in this paper. A genetic algorithm and a finite element programme are used for this purpose. Variable thickness is obtained by ply drop between adjacent subdomains. Ply continuity between subdomains is also ensured by the procedure. The main features of both the genetic algorithm and the finite element programme are described in the paper. Two examples illustrate the relevancy of the approach. They clearly highlight the improvement in term of weight saving which is caused by the extra freedom in structure design due to optimal variable thickness and ply orientation.
