Abstract :
Twenty-four horses with foot or skin trauma and/or infections were presented for experimental topical treatment with acid replacement solution formula 1050 (ARS-1050). The solution was used in medication boots to bathe foot abscess (7 horses), white line (6), and thrush infections (3). It could saturate leg wraps for longer contact with leg wounds or be used by hand sprayer to treat broad areas of traumatized or infected skin (8 horses). Many horses showed an apparent ease from pain of trauma within 2 to 5 days of treatment. A debriding effect was seen in which Dermatophilus-infected skin was sloughed from the body in 3 to 4 days. In treatment of foot trauma, sole structure became more defined and heels became less inflamed, this being attributed to the lower pH chemically separating necrotic from healthy tissue.
