Abstract :
This paper discusses the diffusive permeation of a model hydrophilic drug antipyrine through supported multi-liquid membranes (SMLM). SMLM are prepared by creating parallel water and organic solvent filled pores within a scaffold or support matrix consisting of a microporous membrane. These membranes could potentially be used as biomimetic membranes due to the presence of such parallel transport channels. The relative proportion of water and organic solvent filled pores can be altered very easily allowing significant flexibility in permeability adjustment. SMLM could also be used for controlled permeation or release of drugs and chemicals. The permeability of model hydrophilic drug antipyrine through a series of SMLM having different proportions of aqueous/organic channels is examined. The experimental permeability results are compared with simulated ones. All membranes tested in this study showed zero order release of the drug during the duration of study.
