Abstract :
This study tried to investigate the difference between the inductive and deductive strategies in teaching grammar to Iranian EFL learners. Deductive reasoning applies a general rule to particular instances while inductive reasoning involves inference from the particular to the general. Based on a general English proficiency test, 21 students were considered at the same level. They took a grammar pretest on conditional sentences of English. They were randomly divided into two groups. The first group members were taught deductively, and the second group members were taught inductively. After a six-day lapse, a posttest(identical to the pretest) was administered and the results of the study indicated that although the mean of inductive group appeared to be higher than that of the deductive group, no significant difference was found between participants in the two teaching conditions after an independent T-test was conducted.
