Abstract
As a result of long-term neutron irradiation, the long-lived 14C is produced in the reactor graphite. The exothermic self-sustaining reaction 3C(graphite) + 4Al + 3TiO2 = 3TiC + 2Al2O3 was proposed for processing of such waste. In doing so, the carbon, including the 14C, is chemically bound in the stable TiC. The reaction products in the C–Al–TiO2 system were investigated both by thermodynamic simulation and experimentally in the course of this work.
